When to Contact your Stoma Nurse?

You should contact your stoma nurse if you experience:

Skin irritation around the stoma that does not improve.
Leakage issues with your pouching system.
Changes in your stoma’s size, color, or shape.
Pain or discomfort that persists.
Frequent pouch detachment or difficulty securing the system.

How to Measure your Stoma?

Use a measuring guide – Many ostomy supply manufacturers provide templates to ensure the correct fit.
Measure at the base – Place the guide around your stoma to get an accurate measurement.
Allow space for movement – Cut the skin barrier 1/8 inch (3mm) larger than your stoma to avoid irritation.
Check for leaks – Ensure a snug fit without gaps.

How Long is the Average Wear Time?

Standard wear time for an ostomy pouch and skin barrier is 3 to 7 days, depending on activity level, skin type, and the product used.
Using skin barrier rings and pastes can extend wear time and provide better adhesion.

Can you sleep with an Ostomy?

Yes, you can sleep comfortably with an ostomy by:

Using a high-capacity pouch to avoid frequent emptying.
Sleeping on your back or side to prevent pressure on the stoma.
Securing your pouch with a support belt to prevent movement.
Emptying the pouch before bed to reduce the risk of leaks.
